IHG has been revamping and refreshing its guest loyalty program this spring by renaming it from IHG Rewards to IHG One Rewards with enhanced guest benefits (read more here).
The new program provides better benefits for those who stay at their hotels and spend money by having both Milestone Rewards (number of nights based) and better elite tiers (base points).

IHG has allowed for years members to purchase bonus points with their stays that are also elite qualifying (a unique feature for IHG).
Buying only points using Bonus Points Packages makes practically no sense, as you can often buy them cheaper through frequent sales, but they often work for members with expense accounts (someone else picks up the bill).
However, these Bonus Points Packages do make sense for some IHG One Rewards members who would like to qualify for a higher tier faster or who need an extra push to get to Platinum or Titanium.
There can be offers for 1,000 to 5,000 bonus points PER NIGHT or a set number of points that you earn from the stay regardless of its length.
Bonus points packages that don’t show up on the usual rate search, but are offered by the individual properties, are NOT elite qualifying.

The Bonus Points Packages are only available at the most expensive rate (I guess that IHG understands that members who buy these are NOT price sensitive) and go for up to 5,000 bonus points per night.
Considering the daily rate, you would earn more than 32,000 elite qualifying points on just one stay.

I am sure that more members are now interested in these Bonus Points Packages that are elite qualifying after the program refresh and better elite benefits. You can reach Diamond status in just one expensive stay with a bonus points package attached.
Remember that you also need at least 40 nights within a calendar year to be able to choose the Club Access as one of the Milestone Rewards
IHG knows very well what they are doing here. If you are eager to get IHG One Rewards status, you can essentially buy it!
