Reader Question: How To Confirm That The ShangriLa Circle Status Extension Campaign Was Successful?


Today we have a Reader Question concerning Shangri-La Circle and their current (targeted) promotion to renew the membership status this year simply by having one qualified transaction, as small as a food & beverage purchase at a participating property.

I received the same email and decided to put this to the test, going to the Shangri-La Bangkok for a quick bite to eat during dinner and earning a couple of points in the process.

Circle Jade members, and perhaps Diamonds too, can renew their status by staying or having a point-earning activity at any of their properties, such as lunch or dinner, by December 15, 2022.

Shangri La Circle members can earn points even for small purchases such as buying a coffee, pastry or a meal.

I just ordered a simple pasta and fresh coconut for a total of ~ US$17.

When I ordered the check, I just gave my SLC Jade membership card to the waiter, and they were fully aware of how to credit the points.

The transaction was also posted to the bill:

It only took ~ 36 hours for the transaction to post to the account, and the lever for JADE status was filled out fully:

The status validity still shows 2022, but this is just a matter of time as I was assured when contacting customer care.

Our reader Simon now contacted me with the question of how he can make sure that this transaction does indeed count as the membership expiry still shows December 2022 even following the transaction.

To get a definitive quid pro quo, I decided to open a case with Shangri La customer care to inquire about the way status expiration is being displayed following the transaction and this was their response:

We have taken note of your inquiry regarding the “Renew your Jade status by 15 December 2022” offer. Based on the spending that you had on 24 October 2022 at one of the participating restaurants, we will be delighted to exceptionally renew your current Jade membership during our yearly membership requalification process.

Kindly be reassured that your tier renewal will be reflected accordingly in January 2023, with validity until 31 December 2023.

On the other hand, we are excited to introduce our new member’s exclusive rate that is available via any Shangri-La e-direct channel which includes, Shangri-La Mobile App (Google Play / Apple Store) and the Shangri-La WeChat Mini Program. I already guessed that the actual expiration would eventually be updated after the end of the campaign which is December 15th. Customer care confirmed the update will be visible sometime in January 2023.

John wrote about the promotion when Shangrila first sent out the email to members:

The purchase of a full meal such as I did would probably not have been necessary, and a simple coffee or piece of pastry had been enough (a friend of mine did just this at the ShangriLa Toronto), but I figured it didn’t make much difference as I was hungry anyway.

Customer care has confirmed that the transaction counted towards the campaign and that the expiration will be updated sometime in January 2023.

It’s unclear if there’s going to be a short period when the status is going to lapse. I was planning to have a ShangriLa stay on my birthday in the first week of January but maybe I’ll just play it safe and book Hyatt instead.


Following a Reader Question I contacted ShangriLa to clarify the process of how the program will display the renewed status under the current promotion. Customer care assured me that it will be updated by the end of January but that’s probably their latest date. It’s possible they also get it done earlier.

Shangri-La and its Circle is that the chain is heavily leaned towards those traveling to mainland China, at the very least, the Asia Pacific region. There are some properties in North America, too.

To run this campaign on my account, I went to have dinner at the Shangri-La in Bangkok to extend my Jade tier, which was granted due to a previous Amex Platinum ICC card benefit. The transaction has posted within two days on my Shangri La Circle account. While the chart/lever has been updated the actual expiration date has not.
