the hotel

The Waldorf Hilton hotel turned 114 years old this year. Opened as the Waldorf hotel in 1908, it was designed to be the finest of its time: it opened with 400 bedrooms, 176 bathrooms and a range of innovative features, including a telephone and electric lights that could be switched off at the bedside in all rooms, three elevators and central heating.

The hotel also offered restoration space for passers-by, a popular concept in luxury hotels across the Atlantic, but quite new in the pre-WWI Europe. The Waldorf was built with a Gentlemen’s Smoking room (now the Executive Boardroom), a billiard room (now the Executive Lounge), a ladies writing room (now the Aldwych meeting room), a 300 ft. dining space (now the Adelphi Suite), and the Palm Court lounge, a glass covered courtyard treated as a garden, with a marble terrace around.

Hilton Hotels took over this property in 2004, and since then the property has gone under major renovations, investing around £38.5 million since then, fully refurbishing the interiors (the hotel now offers 298 guest rooms, including 19 suites) and also on architectural conservation works such historical building requires.
